International Design Challenge 2019

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon® is a international collegiate competition, comprising 10 Contests, that challenges student teams from all over the world to design and build highly efficient and innovative buildings powered by renewable energy.

It started in 2002 in Washington and this year, for the first time, it is held in Szentendre, Hungary. As KAN-therm we are excited that one of our Systems, namely SYSTEM KAN-therm Steel, was chosen as a part of solution for increasing energy efficiency!

Teams competing in this extraordinary Design Challenge work for one or two academic semesters to prepare creative solutions for real-world issues in the building industry. Their central goal is to create houses using modern technologies: green technology and renewable energy highlighting the importance of environmental awareness and sustainability, while at the same time focusing on interior comfort, four-season design, and architectural quality.

The winners will be those who manage to blend architectural and engineering excellence with innovation, market potential, building efficiency, and smart energy production.

KAN-therm is always glad to support collegiate teams in becoming part of the next generation of building designers and engineering professionals and therefore, KAN-therm Hungary played a sponsor role during the competition.

Two universities represent Hungary: University of Pécs in consortium with the University of Miskolc and – as an independent team "koeb", the architect team of the famous Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The koeb team exhibits the so-called „koeb modul system” in their modernized Kádár-cube house.

„The theme of the Solar Decathlon Europe 2019 competition focuses on the renovation of existing building stocks that can finally give practical answers to the residents and constructors about the modern and energy-efficient renewal of the existing tentroof (cube) and panel house stock, and about the extension of their life-cycle.

KAN-therm supports the koeb team both from technical and construction side with our SYSTEM KAN-therm Steel solution that is built in the team’s reference house.

The event is held at ÉMI Szentendre Industrial Park, including the fourteen days of the competition and the extended exhibition of two months, and is expected to attract around a hundred thousand local and international visitors, in addition to the approximately 500 competing university students and the people accompanying them. After the 2019 event in Hungary, another Solar Decathlon Europe is planned for 2021 at the host city of Wuppertal, Germany.
